4. Solutions to issues

What if you have problems?
- Internet or tech problems: Sometimes the internet may drop out and disrupt the Zoom recording. Often the recording will restart automatically. If you get locked out of Zoom, restart and note the start time and student name again.
- You’re sick or experience misadventure: If your Interactive Oral Assessments (IOAs) are designed as face-to-face, set up a backup Zoom link in case you’re unwell and decide to do the IOAs from your home. Let students know this is the backup plan. The unit coordinator (UC) and markers can decide on the protocol for contacting students; will it be via an announcement, email, or Canvas inbox?
- A student is sick: A student may miss an IOA due to illness or misadventure and apply for Special Consideration. Decide how students will advise you and other markers, as it’s difficult to check emails during the IOAs. We suggest having some hidden/reserved slots on the last day for students with special considerations. Students can email you to arrange a different time or simply release the hidden slots on the booking site, having advised the students that this is the process.
- Five-day simple extensions (USyd): Extensions are not automatic and are only given in exceptional circumstances by the coordinator. Students should email the coordinator directly and not the tutor.
- Students should use their university email so correspondence can be tracked in case of student appeals: Many students use their personal email which may cause issues. Emphasise in tutorials that university emails should be used.
- Clarify the rules around changing or not attending your IOA: Special consideration rules apply.
- Students who change their plans last minute without sufficient reason to apply for special consideration: Make it clear what the expectations are in this situation. They should be similar to an exam where students show up at the designated time.
